June 24, make sure your flounder are legal

Had two men in this am that stuck around until an hour ago. they got some flounder and stripers along the oceanfront this morning. at least 3 were “keeper” sized. they saw nothing in the river from low tide, but they might of left to early.
note from one of my flounder men. he is seeing flounder being kept that are definitely not keepers. remind our audience that the limit is 8 fish over 12″!!! who would want to keep one any smaller than that? no meat. please, please, please follow the rules.
same flounder man got a lot of flounder yesterday but only 3 were legal size and that still wasn’t saying much about those 3.
worms and clams are working on the flounder. we have clam necks also which stay hook the hook well.
had a man in this am saying they saw, what he thinks were right whales, only 3 miles off the beach. beautiful!

There are some yellowtail flounder around too and those need to be 13″. You can tell a Yellowtail by looking at the bottom side (the white side without the eyes) – they are yellowish near the tail.

So i fish the oceanfront, do i need to decide if i’m going for flounder vs striper? I know flounder rigs use flounder hooks, but those probably won’t work well on striper right?

Fish market flounder and striper fillets in the case are all under size. Why should a sport person be concerned with size when the commercial boats could care less? Last time I checked draggers keep everything in their nets. The tonnage of fish being caught by sport fisher people is not even registering in the scheme of things. The slot limit and minimum size nonsense is not what conserves the stock. Environmental runoff from chicken farms and golf courses has reduced striper stocks more than any other factor.
Let the sport person enjoy the sport and be done with it.

Glad the flounder regs were pointed out on the site, many simply do not know the regs. Striper fishing could not possibly be more dead from the surf than it has been over the last 7-10 days, absolutely dead!

For starters, I like flounder for a meal, but never fish for them. Commercial guys make a living, whether it is flounder in june, or something else in february. The government, for what ever side of the fence you may be on, has to control, which causes the netters possible cut corners.

The last 7-10 days has not been all that bad. Sticking you rod into a holder, or walking the same beach everyday with nothing to show should tell you the fish have CHANGED! Take a ride up toward the ledges of Cape Ann, or Maine, and you’ll find fish. Nightime, and I mean 10pm-3am might be worth a try.

Unfortunately there will always be scumbags taking illegals. So if you see it happening say something, or kick them in the face. They deserve it. I want my kids to be able to catch fish 2 someday.

Rick, I’m a younger guy new to fishing but do you need a license to fish beaches/jetties in MA? I was under the impression no, but if so I need to get on that.
