30 Aug August 30 – What is it?
This past weekend Anthony Ostrander, local fishserman and Plum Island Resident, caught this mackerel out by the Isles of Shoals. They came into the store tonight and we dug through some of the fish books we have but couldn’t determine what kind of mackerel it was. So, can any of you?

Posted at 18:52h, 30 AugustOver on the FLA boards they are saying its a baby bonito. I guess a lot of guys have been getting them out of schools of macs. Some bigger ones too.

Posted at 04:41h, 31 AugustYup…..Baby bonito or bone for short. Adults mostly south of Cape Cod with the Vinyard, Nantucket and Road Island providing excellent fishing in the Northern part of their range from August to early October. Makes excellent sashimi but pretty rare on the North Shore. That’s a trophy in my book!

Posted at 21:19h, 31 AugustFishing since I’ve been 3, grew up fishing the cape..
That there would be a juvie bonito….
Suprised ti see that thi far north of cape.
Usually on south side.
They will run up the canal to the east end abd turn when they feel that cold cape cod bay water…
A BLAST to catch with the right gear and good eatin too.
Its about right time when they start showing up at the cape… gone by first week of october.
