June 17, Sunday night

Okay, this is what I know. Joppa has been fairly quiet this past week unless you like to fish for carp. One of the kayakers Andy “Fog” Haley sent in this picture taken in Joppa last week. Guess a lot came down river with the fresh water. However, we have heard now that a few bass are being taken again so think it is time to get out on joppa again.

Mackerel has turned scarce since the appearance of a few bluefish. The last known sighting that we have heard from the boat guys is that they were at Hampton Shoals Ledge. Friday, John Mele came in with this 11 pounder that he caught on a dead ell from the surf in the Merrimack River.

Saturday we saw some crazy weather roll in. The wind kicked up, the mouth of the river got treacherous, and the weed arrived. Most of the boats couldn’t make it outside of the mouth to fish so we had no reports on how the bass fishing has been going on outside. Those few boats that did make it out got bounced around and didnt stay out too long. Even joppa was rocking on Saturday. Ian Morgenstern was out on the Captains 1/2 day trip that stayed inside the river and picked up this 9-11 pounder on mackerel from the boat.

From the beach it has been really tough fishing these last few days. The weed has hung around. The Kelly boys got a few fish last night on the outgoing tide, but as soon as the tide turned to come in.the weed came in heavy and made for difficult fishing. Bill Page did manage to get this 15-2 during the night tide using worms.
