May 12, Steady but not Super

Guys on the Merrimack river found a slow but steady stream of schoolies yesterday on the outgoing tide. Nothing too active but fish are being taken. One of the regulars took his boat upriver towards the Chain Bridge and was excited to see a Bald Eagle fly over his boat. But under his boat there was no luck grabbing a fish. He says there were fish on his fishfinder lined up. He didn’t know if they might be shad or herring.

Yesterday at sunset in Joppa Flats thee seemed to be a bird blitz at the Clam Shack. I stopped on the way home to watch a big flock of seagulls working something along the South edge. Couldn’t see fish under them, but the seagulls were all diving, and moving slowly along the edge of the marsh. Maybe it was a worm hatch, maybe they found a big school of mummichog. Sure looked like the fish were there. If you saw this picture you’d be motoring your boat right over. Me too.

saw the blitz over joppa in the morning as well. followed with our boat for a while but didn’t see any fish rising. lots of sand eels in the water (one actually got hooked on my shad) and I think the birds were feeding on these.
