27 May May 27, it finally turns on
After a week or so of the stripers turning their noses up at everything offered, especially on the flats, something changed yesterday and this morning the fishing went off. We have had qualified reports from three of our informants. The fishing was awesome this morning, up to 40 fish for the fly guys, and many others for jig huckers. We also have reports of stripers 1/2 mile outside the mouth.
.
Flounder limits are being taken in and around the mouth of the river. It’s getting crowded with boats going for the flat ones, but the bite seems consistent. There are also mackerel just outside the mouth, so the bass could be munching on them too.
.
I have a quote here that might say it all:
“I felt like a Kodiak Bear during the salmon run” . That was the first words out of the mouth of one lucky boat fisherman that got into a huge school of stripers in the river. Our anonymous friend said for 2 hours just after the change of the tide it was a total “fish frenzy”. On plastic bait he caught over 50 fish ranging from 24 inches up. he stopped counting the “keepers” after 10. He says no exaggeration, they were hitting the side of his boat.
